Dry Eye Syndrome is a common issue that tends to become more widespread as we get older. It can bring about noticeable discomfort and challenges in our daily activities, presenting a genuine threat to our eye health and vision.
Tears play a pivotal and crucial role in eye health: they cleanse the eye by removing dirt and bacteria, prevent dryness, and ensure smooth blinking. Additionally, the quality and transparency of the tear film are vital factors for maintaining clear vision.
Thankfully, there are several treatments available for dry eye syndrome today, so an early diagnosis can really make a positive difference in the quality of life for those impacted by this condition.
- Tear substitutes - "artificial tears" with and without preservatives.
- Anti-inflammatory agents - steroid drops, Restasis, Protopic, Xiidra.
- Autologous serum eye drops - drops derived from the patient's blood.
- Blocking of tear drainage pathways - punctal plugs.
- Treatments for eyelid and meibomian gland dysfunction - compresses, warm eye masks, IPL, Rexon.
