The orthopedic trauma unit plays a crucial role in providing urgent treatment to individuals with complicated lower limb fractures. It serves as a national referral center for complex fractures, particularly pelvic fractures, from across the country.
Aside from providing urgent care, the unit's staff specializes in treating nonunion or malunion of fractures. In this regard, the unit is also a center for referrals from all over the country.
The treatment in the trauma unit generally includes surgery to repair and stabilize the fracture, as well as treatment of associated injuries in cases such as:
- Complex orthopedic trauma
- Multiple injuries (multi-trauma)
- Fractures in the pelvis and hip joint
- Complex intra-articular fractures in the knee, ankle, and foot.
