What is the process at the skin clinic for organ transplants?

Organ transplant recipients are typically treated with various drugs to protect the transplanted organ from being rejected. These drugs have the effect of weakening the immune system, which plays a vital role in combating infections and inhibiting tumor growth. Studies show that post-transplantation, the risk of developing skin tumors increases significantly, especially squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma.

As part of the clinic, we regularly monitor patients who have undergone organ transplants, such as heart, kidney, and liver. It is recommended to have an initial examination in the clinic even before the transplant, followed by subsequent examinations every six months. Patients can be referred to the clinic by either themselves or the attending physician at the transplant clinic.

During the examination, patients undergo a comprehensive skin examination. If a suspicious skin lesion is detected, it can be characterized through physical examination using a dermatoscope, and in certain cases, a skin sample (biopsy) may be necessary for a definitive diagnosis. If required, drug treatment is adjusted in coordination with the transplant clinic and the attending physician.

Please note that Dr. Landov has expertise in performing surgeries using the MOHS method. Patients diagnosed with a skin tumor requiring removal through this procedure are referred for surgery at the MOHS surgery unit at Sheba.
