At the Movement Disorders Institute at Sheba, we provide comprehensive care for patients with Parkinson's disease, tremors, dystonia, tics, and other movement disorders (more information about these conditions can be found further down the page). Our patients visit us every 3-6 months for medical follow-up, where they receive treatment recommendations in the pharmaceutical and rehabilitation fields. We provide our patients comprehensive support, including psychological rehabilitation counseling, communication therapy, voice groups, social work support, and support groups. This ensures a holistic approach to their wellbeing.
The Movement Disorders Institute oversees four subclinics and operates a day hospital, offering state-of-the-art treatments.
Functional neurosurgery - This involves evaluating and preparing patients with severe movement disorders - Parkinson's, dystonia, and primary tremor that do not respond to drug treatment - as well as candidates for brain pacemaker implantation or thalamotomy surgery guided by MRI-driven ultrasound waves (MRgFUS). A team of neurosurgeons and neurologists work together to perform the MRgFUS procedure or DBS cerebral pacing system implantation. Following this, we carefully monitor and calibrate the brain pacing values for the implanted patient.
Infusion treatments for Parkinson's patients - Infusion treatment of levodopa‐carbidopa intestinal gel via PEG and infusion of Apo-Go under the skin using an infusion pump.
NPH (Normal pressure hydrocephalus) - An evaluation, in collaboration with a neurosurgeon, is conducted for patients with suspected NPH. Clinical follow-up is performed post-implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) system, with adjustments made to the valve as needed.
Botulinum injections - Local treatment for movement disorders including dystonia, spasticity, tics, and various other involuntary movements. Our AEG and oral and maxillofacial specialists administer special injections for the vocal cords, salivary glands, and jaw muscles.
Day hospitalization - We offer a variety of services, including: diagnostic lumbar acupuncture for NPH patients and other diagnoses; multidisciplinary evaluation of patients with movement disorders who are candidates for advanced intervention; tests for drug treatments, such as levodopa and apomorphine injections; adjusting treatment with an apomorphine pump and a duodopa pump; infusions; Pacemaker calibration, and more.
The Institute’s dedicated staff conducts clinical trials of medicines and medical technologies, and collaborates with academic institutions in academic studies. We also have the privilege of teaching medical and physiotherapy students, along with family doctors, neurologists, and psychiatrists.
