The Burn Intensive Care Unit, which sits within Sheba’s plastic surgery and burns department, is the only center of its kind in Israel. Founded in direct response to the need for advanced medical treatments for the numerous burn victims wounded throughout Israel’s wars, the unit has been functioning within the hospital for more than 20 years. The unit is recognized as a national referral unit for patients.

Around 100-120 patients per year are hospitalized in the unit, among them 20-30 patients suffering from extensive burns. We offer these intensive care patients comprehensive care, including both pre and post-operative treatments. Our goal is to address chronic issues resulting from burn injuries through surgical interventions, as well as provide reconstructive surgeries and scar treatments.

Sheba’s state-of-the-art rehabilitation center provides extensive and holistic care to burn victims upon their discharge from the unit. Our unit’s team of specialists performs surgeries on children, as well as supervising their subsequent recovery in the dedicated children's wards.

Our burn team consists of a dedicated nursing team who are trained in intensive care, along with a psychiatrist, an infectious disease specialist, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a dietitian, a social worker, and a clinical psychologist. They all have experience dealing with burns injuries.

Thanks to Sheba’s close association with Tel Aviv University, the burn unit has a significant role in educating and training medical students, doctors, and nursing staff on burns and their intensive care.

Our unit actively engages in "Tikkun Olam" missions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, providing surgical services and training to teams around the world. Kazakhstan, Kenya, Cameroon, Peru, Paraguay, and Cyprus are just some of the countries where our surgeons have operated and conducted training programs. Over the past two years, our unit has organized national seminars on burns, focusing on topics like pain management and treating complex burn patients. Our goal is to advance burns training and research nationwide.
