Orthognathic, Craniofacial, and Facial Deformities Surgery – Dr. Tal Yoffe, Dr. Ran Yahalom

Diagnosis and treatment of children and adults with congenital, acquired, and developmental facial deformities, including syndromes and facial asymmetries is a challenging and complex field of medicine.
Patients with congenital deformities require examination, monitoring, and treatment from the earliest moments of life until adulthood.

Changes in the facial structure encompass both hard tissues (facial bones, temporomandibular joints, and teeth) and the surrounding soft tissues, which may cause functional limitations in chewing, speaking, swallowing, breathing, vision, and hearing, as well as aesthetic complaints. The combination of functional and aesthetic findings may affect patients' emotional well-being, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Treatment is multidisciplinary and carried out within specialized clinics.
The medical teams in these clinics include maxillofacial surgeons, ENT surgeons, ophthalmologists, pediatricians, plastic surgeons, speech therapists, geneticists, physiotherapists, neurosurgeons, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, prosthodontists, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

Orthognathic Surgery Clinic (Weekly,  Tuesday morning)

The orthognathic surgery service is led by Dr. Tal Yoffe, Deputy Head of the Department. The service includes teamwork with orthodontists, dental prosthetics experts, pediatric dental specialists, ENT surgeons, plastic surgeons, pediatricians, geneticists, and psychologists.

Gender Clinic (Monthly,  Wednesday morning)

Led by Dr. Ran Yahalom, this clinic serves patients approved by the gender committee at our institution, providing facial bone gender-affirming surgeries.

Sleep Apnea and Sinus Clinic (Monthly on Sundays)

The clinic includes specialists in ENT, pulmonology, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. It provides diagnosis and treatment for obstructive airway issues and infectious diseases of the facial sinuses.

Sleep apnea is a syndrome that can significantly impact quality of life. It is characterized by breathing interruptions during sleep, which disrupt its continuity, as well as symptoms such as snoring, daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, and reduced mental well-being.
It is recommended to visit the sleep apnea clinic with the results of a sleep study.

For cases of sinus infections, please bring relevant imaging, such as thin-slice CT scans of the facial bones and sinuses, as well as dental imaging, including panoramic X-rays or dental CT scans.

Craniosynostosis Clinic (Monthly Tuesday morning)

This clinic, involving neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, and maxillofacial surgeons, treats newborns with craniosynostosis, which may impact skull structure and brain development.

Medical Psychology Clinic

Sheba operates two medical psychology clinics offering consultations via the following emails:
For children under 18: psymed@sheba.health.gov.il
For adults over 18: ogen@sheba.health.gov.il

Evaluating the emotional state of patients with facial deformities or those undergoing surgeries that significantly change facial structure and impact breathing, swallowing, speech, and chewing is crucial and forms an integral part of Sheba Medical Center’s holistic approach.
